February 12 Up in Smoke: Secondhand Cannabis & Tobacco Smoke in Public Places

This virtual webinar from the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council features Suzaynn F. Schick Ph.D.
Dr. Schick is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Schick studies the health effects of human exposure to biomass smoke, with a focus on rapid cardiovascular responses and dermal exposures.
She published some of the first data showing that the respiratory toxicity of secondhand smoke is greater than that of the smoke that smokers inhale and that the chemical compounds in secondhand smoke react to create new, carcinogenic compounds. She is one of the founding researchers in the emerging field of thirdhand smoke research.
February 25 Using Medicaid Data to Reach Priority Populations: A Tobacco Control Case Study.

This virtual event hosted by ASTHO will be divided into two parts – first, a case study presentation from King County health agency staff that will include a detailed overview of the data analysis methodology, and findings from their analysis of Medicaid claims and eligibility data to identify Medicaid members who use tobacco in King County. Second, the ASTHO team will host a listening session to better understand the challenges that staff in other state and local tobacco control programs might be facing in leveraging Medicaid data, with the intention of tailoring future resources and technical assistance.

Building on 30 years of continuing education courses, the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center is partnering with Truth Initiative to host the 2025 national conference highlighting the intersection between tobacco control policy and practice. Amidst an evolving tobacco product landscape and scientific evidence, the course will educate attendees about the latest science, treatment best practices, and policy considerations. Attendees will explore a range of challenges and opportunities to deliver tobacco dependence treatment to reduce prevalence and improve the nation's health.
This conference is designed for anyone working with tobacco dependent patients, and those who are interested in the intersection of policy and practice. ONGOING Commercial Tobacco Policy Change Learning Circles
Weekly sessions beginning the second week of January through the end of April.
Initial session is Tuesday Jan. 14th Noon - 1 PM Pacific.
The day and time of ongoing weekly sessions will be set to avoid conflicts with key legislative committee meetings.
We meet weekly during the state legislative session to track, analyze, and discuss commercial tobacco legislation and budget items. We also share ideas about how to engage in Policy Change Education to inform policymakers about the commercial tobacco issues they are grappling with. Signing up for these sessions includes receiving our weekly legislative update emails.
Our Policy Change Learning Circles are for all our members and partners who support Our Vision.
The overall purpose of the Policy Change Learning Circles is to:
- Increase our shared understanding about commercial tobacco policies
- Build our policy education and policy change skills
- Share policy change resources & potential educational actions
